New market analysis has predicted that 60 million tablet devices will be sold this year with Apple continuing to dominate over its rivals throughout 2012.

The Touch Panel Market Analysis report compiled by market research firm DisplaySearch claims that Apple is most likely to strengthen its iron grip on the global tablet PC market this year and the next.
The company also predicted that in 2016, 260 million tablet devices will be shipped worldwide, a growth of 333 per cent from this year.

Apple, having sold fifteen million first generation iPad devices since its launch, is continuing its assault on the sector with the new iPad 2 tablet device, which reportedly sold upto a million units in its first weekend. Apple had sold around 300K units of the first iPad over the same period.

DisplaySearch VP of emerging display technologies, Jennifer Colegrove, said in a statement, “Tablet PCs are the fastest growing application for touch screens. Most tablet PC products will leverage multi-touch projected capacitive technology, following Apple’s lead. At the same time, a small amount of tablet PCs are using resistive touch, since it is less expense and enables handwriting recognition.”

Apple is expected to sell around 40 million iPad 2 units out of the 60 million that will ship this year, the report suggested.
